Entry #5

Project 2: Portraits
Beyond the Individual in Contemporary Art Practice

Artist Statement:

In this project I wanted to portray different lifestyles. The portraits aren't specifically of the people involved in them, but of the idea behind them. I used the idea of negative life choices to represent this idea. I wanted most people in society to relate to these issues.

The negative life choices that I focus on in my work are drugs, alcohol, violence, gambling, and a bad attitude. Most people have witnessed these issues or have suffered from them personally.

With this concept, I didn't want to make the photos to complex or too simple. I wanted the viewer to be able to relate to the images. Each final image consists of two different photos. One photo is of an individual and the other is of something that relates to their negative life choice. The individual is in the foreground of the negative life choice. The negative life choice's opacity is lowered in the background so it's not too overwhelming. I feel that the subtle effect makes the point, but isn't too "in your face".
